How to lay a rug under furniture.
The key to properly arranging furniture around an area rug is to consider the rug the anchor or centerpiece of the room.
Do extend rugs under furniture.
In a big open plan space the rug should sit under the front legs of both the sofas or if you have a large rug then both sofas can sit completely atop the rug.
Lay area rugs in your bedroom at the foot and sides of the bed.
In a living room for instance all of the furniture should be on top of the rug if this isn t possible it s okay to have the front legs of major upholstered pieces on the rug and the back legs off.
In this case you ll want to lay the rug perpendicular to the bed and pull it under stopping a few inches before your nightstands so it s around halfway under the bed with the bed centered on top.
Asymmetrical placement of an area rug below a small sectional.
Other than the size of the room and furniture consider the pattern of the rug.
Extend the rug 12 to 18 inches around a bed for an area rug to look balanced under a bed it should be large enough to extend beyond the sides of the bed at least 18 inches for a king or queen bed and at least 12 inches for a full or twin bed.
Make the rug the base and you can t go wrong.
For large bedrooms set rugs between pieces of furniture to cover empty floor space.
8 x 10 or 9 x 12 king size bed remember the bigger is better rule when it comes to arranging an area rug under a king size bed.
If the rug is going to be under a bed or large furniture make sure enough of the pattern shows.
If you have chairs in the space as well then the front legs of the chair should be touching or hovering on the rug.
A smaller rug in a larger room may look a bit lost and a large rug in a smaller room may overwhelm the space but there are ways to make things work.
Place the rug perpendicular under the bed with enough of the rug reaching out on the sides and in front to place your feet comfortably when getting out of bed or sitting at the foot.
